Responsibility is the other side of the coin of freedom. In the field of journalism this means that freedom of speech has natural limits that are marked by the fundamentals and purpose of the information, that is, by the truth and by the contribution to the good of citizens. So, the responsible exercise of journalism should respond to the need of citizens for truthful information and that it be useful for their material and cultural progress, and should not ever damage the values of human dignity, peace and social harmony.

Welcome to Newspaper Matters!
Newspaper Matters is an Internet public service where readers can analyse
newspaper articles in relation to four key criteria that determine the quality of journalism: Responsibility, Accuracy, Integrity and Independence.
This tab shows you the
definition of Responsibility in the exercise of quality journalism. It aims to give the
reader a starting point for reflection before beginning his or her analysis of an article.
When you click on each tab you will see that each
concept: Accuracy, Integrity and Independence are defined to
help you with your analysis. We invite you to read them carefully.
To make an analysis at Newspaper Matters you have to register as a user of the
platform. You can do that at: Join now Newspaper Matters! from the home page.
Once you’re registered, you can start making an analysis on
any newspaper article that interests you or moves you to express your thoughts.
The information you see in the area on the left called Background Information, contains information about the article
you've analysed and helps to find it.
If you want you can include a picture (thumbnail) of the article using your
mobile phone, a camera, a screenshot or a scanner.
Once you've written your analysis with the help of our text editor you can rate the article in terms of Responsibility, Accuracy, Integrity
and Independence (with the rating stars on your right).
You can also support your analysis with
multimedia evidence. You can include in your analysis: PDF documents, video and audio created
by yourself, your own images and even embed YouTube videos (provided in the format:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5PpTzQifdw).
Other readers of
your analysis can also, once registered, provide further evidence for your analysis using the orange
button: Do you have more evidence to share regarding this
analysis?
Once you have published your analysis,
you can share it with your friends and social networks using the ShareThis button at the top right of this screen.
As a registered user and author of an analysis you can also create Civic Platforms that brings together people interested in
the same issues as you in relation to what is published in newspapers. You can click Civic Platform Example at the Home page to see what it
is.
One more thing.
We invite you to carefully
read our House Rules, to be found at the top right corner of this
screen.
The basis of a responsible information is the accuracy of the information therein contained, whether dates, appointments, names, statements... As well as the accuracy of the language used in its communication, which must be clear and unequivocal. That is why there is a duty of verification. This means checking if the content is true and if the language is appropriate for understanding the message delivered.

Here
you can analyse the article in relation to Accuracy.
Not only does the information need to be accurate, but it also needs to be complete, because the biggest lie is a half truth and the greatest disinformation is bias and superficiality. That is why it has to be reported what the relations between the facts are; of its meaning or significance, of its causes and its consequences. That is, of the why and for what, not just of the what and the how. Hence the requirement in quality journalism for accurate, complete and properly contextualized contents without prior positioning or being tendentious.

Here
you can analyse the article in relation to Integrity.
Good journalism is carried out from the independence of discernment of its professionals and business leaders. That means that information is not propaganda of any ideology or particular party, nor serves specific economic or political interests nor any lobbies. The ultimate goal of correct information is to adequately communicate a truth or ideas and reflections on that truth which citizens need to know.
